INTRODUCTION TO CANNABIS
Marijuana, cannabis and hemp are all names that refer to this unique plant. The marijuana symbol is seen everywhere these days — on clothing, jewelry, key chains and stickers. It’s no surprise that cannabis is the most commonly used illegal drug in the U.S. and worldwide.
The growing popularity of marijuana is evident, but many people lack a standard knowledge about the plant.
Since cannabis is the only plant on the planet that yields both a drug and a useful fiber its no surprise that it has been used for thousands of years. Cannabis has been used as a medicine worldwide for at least 5000 years.
It was part of the British Formulary until 1971 when the Misuse Of Drugs Act was passed, resulting in it being banned. The heyday of cannabis medicine was around the end of the nineteenth century, where it was used for a number of symptoms in a number of forms.
Cannabis has been claimed to help with a large number of wide-ranging symptoms. Typically most research and use seems to focus on cancer, chemotherapy, AIDS, MS and arthritis.
